Lithium or Lead-Acid — Which Golf Cart Batteries are Better?

Touted as more energy-efficient than traditional lead-acid batteries, lithium ion batteries are still a relatively new option for golf cart owners.

Our customers often ask if lithium batteries are really THAT much better for the environment. And we totally get it! With the high price, they want to make sure they get the biggest bang for their buck.

But, what would you say if we told you lithium batteries offer you just that?

The staff at SunFun will tell you a lithium battery is genuinely the best money-saving, highest-performing golf cart battery option out there.

BENEFITS OF LITHIUM GOLF CART BATTERIES

We don’t want you to blindly follow our battery suggestion. Read these 7 reasons we favor lithium ion batteries, and tell us what YOU think.

  1. Longer lifespan.

Lasting approximately 10 years, lithium batteries have anywhere from 2,000 to 5,000 charges in them. Meanwhile, lead-acid batteries have only 500 to 1,000 charges.

AND after only 300 charges, lead-acid batteries will only reach a 50% charge.

  2. Faster charge time.

First of all, lithium batteries hold a charge better than lead-acid batteries. Even on rough terrain, your golf cart should be able to maintain power without becoming “tired” and slowing down.

While lithium-powered golf carts can handle more challenging rides, your traditional lead-acid cart will struggle as the voltage starts to sink.

Lithium batteries also take FAR less time to charge. While you have to wait 8 hours for a lead-acid battery to reach a full charge, lithium batteries recharge in less than 3 hours. And most lithium batteries can rise up to an 80% charge in just ONE HOUR.

  3. Larger carrying capacity.

As we hinted above, lithium carts simply perform better than lead-acid golf carts.

    Why?

Lead acid batteries are HUGE. They weigh two times more than lithium batteries. And the more weight you add to your golf cart, the fewer passengers it can handle and the slower your ride will be.

In other words, your lithium-powered golf cart can reach higher speeds without too much effort and wear on your vehicle. And with less wear comes fewer repair and service costs down the road.

  4. No battery maintenance.

The days of watering your batteries, cleaning corrosion, and checking acid levels are behind you! Lithium batteries come with the added benefit of low maintenance requirements and costs.

This is the perfect solution for drivers who struggle to keep up with routine maintenance requirements or would just rather not have to worry about it.

  5. Fewer upkeep costs.

There’s no doubt about it — lithium batteries do come with a greater upfront cost than lead-acid batteries.

BUT…you would be surprised how quickly lithium batteries pay for themselves.

First of all, they last far longer than lead-acid batteries, so you’ll only need to pay the price once every 10 years or so.

Then, of course, you will save money with low maintenance costs and service needs.

Plus, because lithium batteries charge faster and typically retain their charge for longer, you’ll spend less time with your cart hooked up to the electrical outlet at home — saving you on your monthly energy bill.

  6. Better for the environment & health.

We can’t forget about the environmental and public health benefits of lithium energy!

Unlike their lead-acid counterparts, lithium batteries are free of hazardous materials and don’t require large amounts of energy to recharge.

In fact, the lead in lead-acid batteries contaminates the soil, air, and groundwater if discarded improperly, negatively impacting human health in a myriad of ways.

  7. Easy to convert a lead-acid battery cart.

We’ve noticed that many golf cart owners avoid switching from lead-acid to lithium power simply because they don’t want to deal with the hassle.

The good news? A lead-acid to lithium battery conversion is actually pretty easy — installation is just a matter of swapping the batteries and securing them in place. Simple, quick, and no stress!
